WNJ Swamp Sightings: Midnight frog chasing in the Dismal Swamp

As any New Jerseyan knows, a warm spring evening is the perfect time for catching bullfrogs.  Okay, maybe it's not the most popular nightlife scene in the state, but Turtle Pond in Edison is a great meeting spot for these loud, hefty jumpers. Bob Spiegel, David Wheeler and Dana Patterson of Edison Wetlands Association led a frog catching expedition on a recent night, and Patterson had the biggest catch of the day - a massive bullfrog that looked big enough to eat a painted turtle!  As the frog finally jumped out of Patterson's hands, Steve the Cat provided security detail for its return to Turtle Pond.  See photos below for this fun ...

The Star-Ledger: Jehovah’s Witness center proposal draws concern in Edison

A plan to build a Jehovah’s Witness center on a portion of the Dismal Swamp wildlife sanctuary in Edison is drawing controversy over a proposed road that would cut through preserved parkland. The religious center is slated for a parcel of land known as the Visco property, one of the last privately owned sections of the 620-acre swamp. Middlesex County recently purchased a large portion of the Visco property. But Delores Visco — wife of the late developer Nicholas Visco — gave three acres to the Jehovah’s Witness church for the center. But the property is landlocked.
